Coral Restoration Foundation Curaçao

Dive Travel Curacao | Coral Restoration Curacao

Coral Restoration Curaçao (formerly Coral Restoration Foundation Curaçao) was set up in 2015 by the initiative of Ocean Encounters Diving Curacao.

After seeing the impact of the work that the Coral Restoration Foundation was doing and the success of Reef Renewal Bonaire, Ocean Encounters was keen to bring this work to Curaçao. With the help and knowledge of Ken Nedimyer (founder of Coral Restoration Foundation) Coral Restoration Curaçao was founded.

The main objectives of this program are the restoration of our shallow water reef system, educating the community (the youth in particular) and protecting and preserving Curacao’s natural ecosystem.

Coral Restoration Curaçao’s (CRC) vision is of a future where the shallow water reef systems of Curaçao are no longer threatened and ocean stewardship and protecting our coral reefs is at the heart of Curaçao’s culture.

All aspects of our island depend on coral reefs, from coastal protection and food on our table to revenue from tourism. The existence of coral reefs is intertwined into much of the infrastructure and revenue on the island. However, these coral reefs are threatened by human impacts and reef restoration is only part of the solution.

“The significance of the Curaçao Reef Restoration Program is that together as a community here on Curaçao, we will be restoring our shallow water reef system while educating our youth about the importance of protecting and preserving our natural ecosystem,” according to Pol Bosch at CRC, who adds: “I believe programs like this help solidify a natural sustainability for future generations.”

For us to effectively build back and restore the shallow water reef systems of Curaçao, we need the support of a variety of stakeholders and government officials.

Since the launch in 2015, CRC has successfully now out now planted over 9,000 corals at various popular dive sites along Curaçao’s southeastern coastline such as Pierbaai at Marie Pampoen, Stella Maris, and Director’s Bay.

The Foundation’s Board has “branched out” and expanded the nurseries by enlisting Divecenter ScubaDo and Scubacao as a new CRC Dive Center affiliate members with additional nurseries located at Avila Beach Hotel, LionsDive Beach Resort, Kontiki Beach Resort and Baoase Luxury Resort.

By doing so, the Foundation’s Board is confident that they can provide triple the number of coral fragments available to be out planted back onto Curaçao’s fringing reefs.

We need to take the importance of coral reefs out of the water and make it something that is valued by the whole community of Curaçao.

By supporting valuable and sustainable coral reef initiatives, like CRC, you will be reaffirming your commitment to the island of Curacao so that future generations may benefit. Supporting this initiative through sponsorship and charitable donations is integral for success and volunteers will be needed for regular nursery maintenance and care. Donate, become a CRC volunteer or Adopt A Coral today. Together, we are making a difference for Curaçao!
