Watamula in Westpunt, Curacao
Watamula derives its name from the Dutch word “Watermolen“, meaning watermill, because of the how the currents flow in this number 1 Boat Diving Site!! You really never understand what the currents will be doing until you check: sometimes they are flowing North/South, other times South/North and other times they are flowing in a circle!!
The Watamula North and South moorings offer the diver an intense and sometimes overwhelming spectacle starting with a hard coral field, then a soft coral patch, then finally ending with another hard coral field!
It is so intense that the diver really does not know where to look first! In addition to the massive coral formations, the intensity of the macro life combined with Ocean Triggerfish, Schools of Chubbs and Porcupine Fish, this dive site will leave you breathless.
You will surface wanting to don another tank for more, believe me!!
How do you dive at Watamula?
The first question is always, “Can I dive at Watamula from shore?” The answer is yes, of course. However, there are very few – if any – accessible points from shore that would allow you to experience the best parts of Watamula safely. But believe me when I say, divers try all the time. Therefore, the question really should be: “Should I consider diving Watamula from shore?” The answer is no.
Honestly, the best way to experience Watamula is by boat. The crew at GO WEST Diving is highly experienced and will be able to show you the very best sections of Watamula that are simply inaccessible by shore. As mentioned above, the currents are unpredictable at this site which is why this is the number 1 boat dive on Curaçao – aside from Eastpoint of course. So whether you start at the north or south mooring, Watamula is a mind-blowing experience that is a must dive during any scuba diving vacation in Curaçao.
