Despite their efforts, the situation only worsened. Compounding the problem, the crew had neglected to close the portholes, allowing water to flood into the ship’s compartments.

With the ship taking on water and the situation rapidly deteriorating, the Curaçao Port Authority dispatched a tugboat in a last-ditch effort to save the MV Superior Producer. However, even with the tugboat’s assistance, the ship continued to list dangerously. The Harbormaster, recognizing the imminent threat to both the crew and the harbor itself, made the difficult decision to cease all rescue efforts.
The tugboat dragged the crippled vessel approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet) west, just outside the harbor entrance. At 16:30, a mere three hours after casting off, the MV Superior Producer succumbed to the sea, disappearing beneath the waves.
Fortunately, the captain and crew were able to abandon the ship safely. All were rescued by a boat from the Harbor Police.
