DOXA Watches are now available in Curaçao for the first time. Freeport Jewelers has been appointed the official DOXA Watches Authorized Dealer for the island, and the full SUB collection is sold exclusively at Handelskade 23, Punda, in the heart of UNESCO-listed Willemstad.

For divers, this matters more than a new name in a shop window. DOXA built the first dive watch designed around the three questions that truly matter underwater: how deep you are, how long you have been down, and how much time remains before a decompression obligation begins. That was 1967. Much of the industry has been borrowing from it ever since.

Curaçao is a fitting place for the brand to arrive. This is an island where divers still plan and run their own dives, unguided, walking in off the shore several times a week — and where a watch built for precisely that job has, until now, been impossible to buy. Bon bini, DOXA.

Where to Buy DOXA Watches in Curaçao

DOXA Watches are available in Curaçao exclusively at Freeport Jewelers, Handelskade 23, Punda, Willemstad. Freeport Jewelers is the island’s official DOXA Watches Authorized Dealer.

Freeport Jewelers is a family-owned Curaçao business established in 1972 and today the island’s largest premier watch and jewelry destination, with six locations across Willemstad. Every DOXA purchased there carries duty-free pricing, a global two-year manufacturer’s warranty and after-sales service through DOXA’s centers in Europe and the USA.

Until now, divers here who wanted a DOXA bought one abroad or online, with no local authorized dealer nor the chance to try one on a wrist first. That has changed.

“Curaçao has earned its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s great diving destinations,” said Mahesh Mukhi of Freeport Jewelers. “Having spent many years diving around the island—including deep, wreck, night and rescue diving—I have a personal appreciation for our waters and coral reefs. That is why DOXA feels so right for Curaçao. It is a serious Swiss dive watch with genuine history and purpose, but it is also distinctive enough to be enjoyed well beyond the water. For Freeport Jewelers, bringing DOXA to the island is a natural fit.”

Why Curaçao Suits DOXA Watches

Curaçao suits the brand because it is a world-class scuba diving destination where divers plan and manage their own dive profiles — exactly the diver DOXA engineered for in 1967.

Plenty of brands arrive in a market and then look for reasons to belong there. DOXA has the opposite problem: the reasons were already waiting.

An island that dives 365 days a year

Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt and dives year-round. There is no closed season and no month when a dive watch sits unused in a drawer. The island has more than 70 documented scuba diving and snorkeling sites, among them the MV Superior Producer wreck, Mushroom Forest, Watamula, Tugboat, Director’s Bay, Black Rock and Alice in Wonderland at Playa Kalki.

An island where divers plan their own dives

This is the part that matters most.

Curaçao is one of the world’s great independent shore-diving islands. Diver’s drive and park at the site, kit up on the tailgate, then easily walk in and manage the whole dive themselves. Frequently there is no guide, no boat and no divemaster counting heads. The diver owns their own depth, their own time and their own no-decompression limit.

Which is why a bezel carrying a decompression table is not a nostalgic flourish on this island. It is a working instrument.

“DOXA didn’t decorate itself with diving — it built the tools that made recreational diving safer, and it did that alongside the people who invented the sport,” says Bryan Horne, Founder and Managing Director of Dive Curaçao and Dive Travel Curaçao. “Having that watch sold on Handelskade, on an island where divers plan their own profiles off the shore every single day, makes complete sense. It should have happened years ago.”

The History of DOXA Watches

DOXA was founded in 1889 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Georges Ducommun, and is one of the oldest continuously operating Swiss watch manufacturers.

From Le Locle to the ocean floor

DOXA’s early reputation rested on precision pocket watches and, later, patented eight-day dashboard clocks fitted to early automobiles, including Bugatti models.

Then recreational scuba diving exploded in the 1960s and nobody was building a watch for it. Existing dive watches were dress watches with rotating bezels bolted on. DOXA started instead from the diver’s problem.

1967: the SUB 300 changes diving

In 1967 DOXA launched the SUB 300, the first dive watch to integrate a no-decompression table directly into its bezel. It was developed with the cooperation of U.S. Divers, the company chaired by Jacques-Yves Cousteau from 1957 until his death in 1997. Cousteau’s dive teams adopted it.

This is the distinction separating DOXA from brands that later sponsored divers: DOXA is a brand that divers helped design.

1968: the helium escape valve arrives

The SUB 300T Conquistador of 1968 became the first commercially available wristwatch fitted with a helium release valve, engineered for saturation divers living for days inside pressurized habitats. DOXA SUBs went on to be worn by U.S. Navy SEALAB personnel and French Marine Nationale combat divers — not through sponsorship, but because they worked.

DOXA Watches, Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt

In 1969 the author Clive Cussler received an orange SUB 300T. He gave one to his fictional hero Dirk Pitt, who has worn an orange DOXA across a body of work exceeding eighty-five books and one hundred million copies sold. Cussler founded NUMA, the National Underwater and Marine Agency, in 1979 to locate and survey historic shipwrecks.

For a generation of readers, the orange DOXA was the first dive watch they ever met — on the page, long before the water.

The Technology Behind DOXA Watches

Three features define the DOXA SUB: the patented no-decompression bezel, the helium escape valve, and the beads-of-rice bracelet with wetsuit extension.

What is the DOXA no-decompression bezel?

The DOXA no-decompression bezel is a patented unidirectional bezel carrying two scales. The outer ring shows depth. The inner ring shows the corresponding no-decompression limit at that depth.

Together they put a dive table on the wrist, readable immediately, without arithmetic at twenty-four meters.

How the DOXA no-decompression bezel works

At the start of the dive the diver aligns the twin-dot descent marker with the minute hand. As the dive runs, the minute hand sweeps the bezel, and the diver reads remaining no-stop time against current depth. The bezel is unidirectional with 120 audible clicks, so it can only ever be turned in the direction that shortens the calculated dive. Knocked underwater, it fails safe.

A backup and a cross-check, not a replacement

An important note for newer divers: the bezel is a backup, not a substitute for a dive computer, proper training, conservative profiles and a safety stop. Dive Curaçao recommends every diver carry a computer, stay within recreational limits and hold current DAN dive medical insurance coverage. What the bezel adds is redundancy — and when you dive unguided from shore, redundancy is not a luxury.

What is the DOXA helium escape valve?

The helium escape valve vents helium that migrates into the watch case during saturation diving. On decompression that gas expands and, without an escape route, can force the crystal clean off. DOXA’s valve releases it automatically.

Most recreational divers in Curaçao will never need one. It matters anyway, because it is physical proof of the tolerances the watch was built to. Everything a sport diver will ever do sits comfortably inside them.

The beads-of-rice bracelet

Less celebrated, but the feature divers appreciate most day to day: the DOXA beads-of-rice bracelet with folding clasp and ratcheting wetsuit extension, designed to be adjusted over a 3-5mm suit with one hand on a rolling boat. Anyone who has fought a bracelet over a wetsuit sleeve will understand.

Why DOXA Watches Are Orange

DOXA selected orange for its “Professional” dial after underwater legibility testing, because orange retains contrast at depth better than other colors as water absorbs the red end of the spectrum. It was the first orange dive watch dial ever produced and remains the most widely imitated.

The orange dial is not styling. It is a test result.

Matching a DOXA dial to Curaçao’s water

Pleasingly, the palette maps almost perfectly onto this island’s own water. Caribbean is the deep blue beyond the drop-off at Shipwreck Point. Aquamarine is the shallows at Cas Abao on a flat morning. Sea Emerald is the seagrass off Spanish Water. And Professional orange is what you want on your wrist when the light drops on a late dive at Playa Kalki.

The DOXA watches color palette is one of the most famous and unique corporate color identities in horology. Instead of using generic names like "orange" or "black," DOXA uses special nomenclature assigned to each specific dial color. The primary palette features eight core colors, complemented by a few unique limited or military editions.

The Full DOXA Watches Range Available in Curaçao

Freeport Jewelers carries the collection from the SUB 200 through to the SUB 750T, including the newly launched SUB 300 Ti5 in Grade 5 titanium, plus special editions.

DOXA SUB 200 and SUB 200T

The entry point into the range. The SUB 200 offers the full color palette in the most wearable case the brand makes — the natural first DOXA. The SUB 200T develops the idea in a 39mm × 41.5mm case around 10.7mm thick, in sunray and matte finishes.

Best for: one watch that works on the reef and at dinner.

DOXA SUB 250T GMT

Introduced in 2025, reinstating the GMT complication to the SUB line for the first time since 2006. A 40mm × 42.9mm cushion case, 10.85mm thick, 250m water resistance, roughly fifty hours of power reserve, in nine colorways. Crucially, DOXA did not surrender the bezel to a 24-hour scale: the dual-scale no-deco bezel stays, and the second time zone reads from the 24-hour hand.

Best for: the visiting diver keeping one hand on home time while diving Curaçao and Bonaire.

DOXA SUB 300

The modern reissue of the 1967 original, case profile preserved. Compact, flat, and it disappears under a wetsuit cuff in a way modern divers rarely expect.

Best for: purists, smaller wrists, and anyone who wants the watch Cousteau’s teams wore.

DOXA SUB 300T

The 1200m evolution, with the cushion case and direct lineage back to the 1968 Conquistador. More presence on the wrist, more versatility above water.

Best for: the all-rounder — drift diving at Black Rock in the morning, evening dinner in Punda.

DOXA SUB 300 Ti5

Launched worldwide in September 2026, the SUB 300 Ti5 brings Grade 5 titanium into the SUB 300’s permanent collection for the first time, having been previewed on the limited Clive Cussler edition. It keeps the 1967 original’s proportions, patented no-decompression bezel and 300m water resistance, with a 42.5mm × 45mm case, 13.4mm thickness and a COSC-certified Sellita SW200-1 movement. Titanium construction cuts case weight by roughly 40% versus the steel SUB 300 while adding corrosion resistance — a meaningful difference on a wrist that spends several hours a week in salt water.

The Ti5 launches in five colorways: orange Professional, black Sharkhunter, blue Caribbean, cherry Red Coral and a fully luminous Whitepearl, the last with its entire dial surface treated in Super-LumiNova for a uniformly glowing face in low light. Each is fitted to DOXA’s textured Dive Flex rubber strap, colour-matched to the dial, with the Whitepearl and Redcoral also available on black.

DOXA Sub 300 Ti5 Caribbean

Best for: divers who want the SUB 300’s heritage shape without the steel-case weight on a long dive day.

DOXA SUB 600T and SUB 750T

Larger cases, greater depth capability, considerably more wrist presence. These are the models for technical divers, deep wreck divers and working professionals. On an island where most diving sits comfortably within recreational depths, they are an indulgence rather than a necessity — and it is worth saying so plainly. They are also, on the wrist, magnificent.

DOXA special edition, including the Clive Cussler models

The SUB 300T Clive Cussler is a special-edition piece that looks like it was found in a shipwreck.  A 42.5mm case with a deliberately aged finish, 300m water resistance, an incredible and multidimensional beige dial, and a case back engraved with shipwrecks located by NUMA. A portion of the overall profit is donated to NUMA.

DOXA Watches and the Underwater World

DOXA’s connection to the ocean runs through the company’s history rather than alongside it. Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society adopted the DOXA SUB as the official timekeeper of its expedition team in 2011, and a share of the profit from the Clive Cussler editions goes to NUMA. It is a consistent pattern of aligning the brand with people working to understand and protect the ocean rather than simply photograph it.

Diving responsibly in Curaçao

That outlook finds a natural audience here. Curaçao’s reefs are among the healthiest in the southern Caribbean, and the island’s dive community is unusually conservation minded. Many local operators work to Green Fins environmental standards, and responsible diving practice forms part of the standard briefing rather than an afterthought:

  • Buoyancy control first — most reef damage is accidental contact
  • No contact with coral, and no gloves used as an excuse to touch
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, applied well before entry
  • Correct weighting, so you are not finning downward to stay level

There is a quiet link between the watch and the practice. A bezel that keeps you inside your limits also keeps you unhurried, and an unhurried diver is one who does not crash into the reef.

What This Means for Curaçao as a Dive Destination

“Curaçao is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the Caribbean, and it still does not get the recognition it deserves,” says Bryan Horne. “We have more than seventy scuba diving and snorkeling sites, reef in genuinely good condition, diving three hundred and sixty-five days a year outside the hurricane belt, and none of the crowding you find elsewhere in the region. You can walk into the water here at sunrise, unguided, and have a world-class reef to yourself.”

“When a brand with DOXA’s standing in the diving world chooses to establish itself here, it says something to divers everywhere that no tourism campaign can say on our behalf. It puts Curaçao in the same sentence as the destinations divers already dream about — and that is exactly where this island belongs.”
