Explore Nature at Newtown
Newtown was built in 1880 as an industrial complex to mine manganese. It borders of the former plantations Lagoen (Lagun) and Zevenbergen. The construction method is comparable to oldest buildings of Nieuwpoort in Fuikbaai and was operated by the same owners at the time.
The Complex, that now lies in ruins, consists of three buildings, a terrace and walls. The Main building with rectangular floor plan has two stories and a gabled roof covered with red English tiles. Additionally there are smaller out buildings on the property with the same rectangular floor plans, two stories and gabled roofs.
There is a cistern located next to rectangular large hall of the one story building too. At some distance away to the southeast, on either side of a large dam, are remnants of buildings that were part of the mining activities.
