The Ultimate 8 Day Snorkeling Adventure
The Suit Ocean Team represented a large group of volunteers, businesses and institutions who love Curacao and wanted to make a tangible contribution to promote the accessible beauty of Curacao’s fringing coral reefs while underlining the need to conserve, preserve and to protect these delicate eco-systems.
As mentioned earlier, The Suit Ocean Team snorkeled approximately 100 kilometers while filming Curacao’s beautiful underwater kunuku over an eight day period.
East to West Snorkeling Route
The objective of the Lawrence Mensa Foundation was to produce a very unique and special documentary about Curaçao’s underwater world with emphasis on the fact that Curacao is a World Class Destination located in the heart of the Dutch Caribbean.
Since the premier, it has also served to highlight the plentiful marine biodiversity is not only attractive and available to scuba divers, but also accessible to swimmers and snorkelers equipped with a simple mask and snorkel.
Another benefit derived from this documentary has been the applied value for local education and for scientific research purposes.
Aside from easily viewing this short documentary on The Suit Ocean Team’s YouTube channel, many tourists and locals alike visit the Curacao Sea Aquarium where they are provided a short presentation by Chris Richards (the narrator of the English version) and are able to comfortably watch the entire documentary in the Curacao Dolphin Academy theatre.
Relive the Ultimate Curacao Snorkeling Adventure
Impressions from 8 days of snorkeling from the eastern tip of Curacao, known as Eastpoint, to the western most point, known as Watamula in Westpoint.
Day 1 Impressions: “The coral reefs at Eastpoint represent a window into the past when Caribbean reefs were healthy and vibrant everywhere. What was down there to see was magnificent and will be brought to screens for others to enjoy as well.” Discover Curacao, a coral island located in the heart of the Dutch Caribbean.
Day 2 Impressions: “The world that lies just below the waterline here on Curaçao is a 360 degree kaleidoscope of colors and abundant life that keeps coming back once you immerse yourself…. where the ocean meets land. There is without a doubt; so much to see, so much to enjoy, so much to protect… and still so much to learn. This is WHY we’re filming this adventure.”
Day 3 Impressions: “The significance of the Curaçao Reef Restoration Program is that together as a community here on Curaçao, we are restoring our shallow water reef system while educating our youth about the importance of protecting and preserving our natural ecosystem,” according to Pol Bosch, Reef Renewal Curacao, who adds: “I believe programs like this help solidify a natural sustainability for future generations.”
Day 4 Impressions: “The Wederfoort Family at Boca Sami in St. Michiel joined us with with a multitude of family and friends from the neighbourhood. They welcomed The Suit Ocean Team cheering on everyone involved. Dive legend, Eric Wederfoort and his wife Yolanda really surpised us! As The Suit Ocean Team was diving and swimming along the coastline, neighbors were waving, whistling, and cheering…”
Six days ago, The Suit Ocean Team embarked on the ultimate snorkeling adventure.
Now half way to the finish point, this incredible group of Curacao citizens who volunteered their time and energy (plus the amazing private sector support/sponsorship) have been creating an awareness about the beauty and the importance to protect the fringing coral reefs that are within a fin kicks of the Curacao coastline.
Day 6 Impressions: “The serious current on certain parts of the route tested The Suit Ocean Team but of course it was no problem for them, other then slowing them down at certain stages of the day. Fish, healthy fringing reefs, turtles, variety of jellyfish, nice size groupers all kept the attention of the The Suit Ocean Team from the start until the arrival at Santa Martha Bay. But the incredibly healthy reefs is what stays in our memories! Priceless!”
Day 7 Impressions: “Kids for Corals Curaçao, a non-profit Foundation, is meant to give disadvantaged children a chance to learn the snorkeling skills and learn about the treasures we have in the waters around the island of Curacao and the importance of protecting this fragile environment.”
The Foundation gives these kids the chance to get out of their own environment and to teach them that they can be useful in the process of protecting the coral reef. The major goal of Kids for Corals is the awareness of maintaining our fragile coral reef for future generations.
For most of the kids it is the first encounter with the beautiful marine world. Most of them are amazed of what they can see under the sea level.
Day 8 Impressions: “Please respect our sea turtles and our local fishermen at Playa Piskadó. Do not touch nor feed the turtles, don’t chase after them but respect their natural environment and help us conserve this beautiful and unique experience.”
For years the local fishermen have been cleaning and selling fish at this particular beach which is also a Fisherman’s Wharf. Nowadays, Playa Piskadó has become a popular spot for our island’s visitors and snorkeling ‘with’ the turtles is in high demand.
BUT… Before you get in the water we would like to invite you to first read the signs and information made available at the beach by Sea Turtle Conservation Curacao.
NOW WATCH the Curacao Underwater Kunuku, a film that documents The Suit Ocean Team’s ultimate Caribbean snorkeling adventure, that shows you how easy it is for everyone to access and enjoy a snorkel or diving experience! Please, take every available opportunity to conserve, preserve and protect these vital underwater habitats for the benefit of future generations.
